SOCOTEC guarantees a high-quality construction for the new Anglès bypass in Girona, enhancing connectivity and mobility
The new Anglès bypass in Girona, connecting the C-63 and N-141e roads, is now a reality thanks to the comprehensive civil engineering services provided by SOCOTEC.
General Information
- Year: 2021- 2024
- Client: Infraestructures.cat
- Location: Gerona - España
Under SOCOTEC's project management and testing, a new 1.6 km road has been built, diverting traffic from the urban center and improving mobility in the area.
The new road section features a two-lane carriageway, each lane 3.5 meters wide, separated by a one-meter median and one-meter shoulders. It also includes a 485-meter tunnel. The project has also included the construction of two roundabouts to facilitate connections to the C-63 and other roads, as well as underpasses to ensure access to the cemetery and continuity of existing paths. In addition, the necessary infrastructure has been enabled for the future extension of fiber optics in the area

"Thanks to these features, the Anglès bypass tunnel is positioned as one of the most modern and safe in the Catalan road network."
Testing
Road Paving
Gracias a su amplia experiencia en ensayos de pavimentos y materiales de construcción, ha llevado a cabo un riguroso control de calidad en todas las fases de la obra de la variante de Anglès.
Soil tests
Extensive soil tests were conducted on both existing materials and those brought in for the construction of the new roads. These tests, carried out using methods such as nuclear density meters and plate loading tests, allowed for the evaluation of the geotechnical characteristics of the soils and the selection of the most suitable materials for each application.
Shotcrete testing
During the construction of over 400 linear meters of tunnel, rigorous quality control of the shotcrete was implemented. Cores were extracted to determine compressive strength, fiber content, and coating thickness. These tests ensured that the concrete met the design requirements and provided the necessary durability for the tunnel structure.
Asphalt tests
Once the excavation and tunnel construction works were completed, the road surface layer was laid. To ensure the quality and durability of the pavement, rigorous quality control was carried out, including the following tests:
- Laboratory specimen preparation: Hot mix asphalt samples were prepared to determine their bulk density, maximum density, void content, and water sensitivity. These tests verified that the materials met the required technical specifications.
- In-situ core extraction: Samples were extracted from the finished pavement to verify the thickness of the different layers and to ensure that the materials were properly compacted.

Thanks to SOCOTEC's work, the Anglès variant is a benchmark project in terms of quality and safety. This new infrastructure will improve connectivity between Girona and Olot, as well as the municipality's connection to the Eix Transversal, contributing to the region's economic and social development.
