SOCOTEC is part of the site management for the L9 project
The tunnel boring machine has started drilling away for the L9 project of the Barcelona metro system, which should link up La Sagrera with the University quarter.

The commissioning ceremony of the tunnel boring machine was inaugurated by Jordi Puigneró, Vice-President and Minister for Digital Policies and Territory with the Catalan Government, Janet Sanz, Second Deputy Mayor and Minister for Ecology, Urban Planning, Infrastructure and Mobility for Barcelona City Council, Ricard Font, General Secretary of the Vice-President’s Office and Minister for Digital Policies and Territory with the Catalan Government, Miquel Buch, President of IFERCAT (Rail Infrastructure in Catalonia), and David Prat, General Director for Infrastructure and Mobility with the Catalan Government.
SOCOTEC, alongside TPF Getinsa Euroestudios and Tunelconsult, is in charge of the site management for the L9 project, the biggest civil engineering endeavour in Catalonia for more than 20 years. The Catalan Government will invest 926 million Euros in the project and the works are planned to be completed by 2027.
The tunnel boring machine that took over the digging activities is currently just 220 metres away from the future Manuel Girona station and is heading towards Lesseps, for which 4.2 km worth of tunnel should be dug out.
The 100-metre-long and 12-metre-wide machine has more than 300 blades, and one of its key features is that it maintains appropriate pressure on the dug-out surface and places the final tunnel wall behind it as it moves.
