Methods for monitoring, analysis, and testing of deep foundations in Spain

3rd TECHNICAL CONGRESS ON DEEP FOUNDATION MONITORING

Fri 25/10/2024 - 09:52

The Deep Foundation Monitoring Congress organized by SOCOTEC has highlighted the growing importance of early monitoring to ensure the safety and durability of our infrastructures.

Thanks to Pile Dynamics technologies, monitoring systems allow for precise and early evaluation of the condition of deep foundations.

However, the congress, which brought together over 190 industry professionals at CEDEX, revealed that the full potential of these innovative tools has not yet been fully exploited in Spain

Precise and validated assessment for infrastructures

The primary objective of the congress has been to promote the adoption of innovative deep foundation monitoring technologies in Spain, as presented by international experts from SOCOTEC and Pile Dynamics Inc.

Through case studies from the United Kingdom and the United States, it has been demonstrated how these methods can extend the lifespan of infrastructure, reduce costs, and improve construction safety by providing more accurate and timely information

Keys to Deep Foundation Monitoring

  • Juan Diego Bauzá opened the conference, highlighting the crucial importance of monitoring in construction, with a particular focus on the limited understanding of pile-soil system behavior. Bauzá emphasized the need to improve the representativeness of methods for sizing and quantifying soil resistance, as well as to promote monitoring in regulations.

  • Josep Raventós from SOCOTEC Spain has delved into the importance of geotechnical and structural monitoring to validate numerical models and ensure structural safety. He has underscored the need for rigorous control throughout the entire process, from design to the interpretation of field data. Raventós has highlighted a paradox: many of the instruments used to measure stresses actually measure deformations.

  • To carry out effective monitoring, systems such as the High Strain Dynamic Test (HSDT) with Pile Dynamics Inc.'s PDA have been presented. This system allows for real-time and post-processing monitoring of hammer performance, impact stresses, pile integrity evaluation, and load capacity calculation.

  • Michael Plummer, Technical Director of Monitoring at SOCOTEC UK, complemented the presentation by demonstrating how SOCOTEC applies real-time monitoring systems to projects involving compressive loads of up to 30 MN, tensile loads of up to 15 MN, lateral loads of up to 6 MN, and compressive reaction systems of up to 3500 kN

This congress has been an exceptional opportunity to discover how these innovative solutions are transforming global construction quality and reliability standards and how they can be successfully adapted to the Spanish context.

Pile Dynamics Inc. technology, backed by SOCOTEC's extensive international experience, will allow us to refine our methodologies and raise quality standards in the construction sector.
