The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction has announced the winners of the Holcim Awards 2023.

Among the winners is the Infinito Delicias, a sustainable engineering project by SOCOTEC.

The winning projects, selected by a jury of independent experts from around the world, highlight contextual and practical approaches to sustainable construction, showing diversity in scales, budgets, geographies, and forms.

In Europe, the Gold Award winner for El 17. Composition is the Knowledge House (Infinito Delicias), a rehabilitation project of an industrial building in Madrid, Spain. The project, carried out by the studios Husos, Elii and Ultrazul, with the engineering of SOCOTEC, uses an integrated 360° co-design process for the structural and installation design and BREEAM sustainability consultancy.

The project's sustainable features include

Make construction more sustainable

The co-design process engaged the local community, from residents to social organizations. This resulted in a project that meets the needs and aspirations of the community.

The gardens and orchards in the project promote urban biodiversity by contributing to circular food production-consumption cycles and using collected rainwater.

The building is equipped with a number of energy efficiency measures, including solar panels and renovated lighting and air conditioning systems.

The original building was built in 1928 and housed a paper mill. The rehabilitation project preserved the building's original structure, but transformed it into a multifunctional space that houses a library, a research center, an event space, and a community garden.
