Project details:
The Master Plan of Punta Colorada, located in Pinar del Río, had as its main objective to turn it into an important tourist destination and to promote economic development in the region.
This project is the result of the collaboration between La Playa Golf and Resorts International and the Cuban government, with the aim of becoming a world-renowned tourist attraction.
The first phase of the project covered an area of 750 hectares, but the complete plan envisaged a total area of approximately 6,500 hectares.
Punta Colorada is known as the "Garden of Cuba" and has nature reserves, as well as the Viñales Valley, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Masterplan
SOCOTEC developed the engineering of the Masterplan, defining and quantifying various aspects of the project:

Masterplan
Canal
The canal was conceived as an essential landscape element and implemented actions to improve connectivity, such as the introduction of a hydro-taxi service connecting the marina with the main hotel. Restrictions were placed on the maximum length of boats allowed. In addition, small private boats were allowed and checkpoints were set up at the connections to the sea. The canal has a length of 4.8 km and an excavation of 800,000 m3 was carried out, including the removal of topsoil.
Marina and beaches
An inlet was designed on the northern side and a north-west facing channel to reduce the impact of waves. Floating pontoons were foreseen to adapt to sea level variations. In addition, a separate service dock was created to minimise visual impact and disturbance to residential and commercial areas.
The project created several beaches with minimum dimensions of 30-40 m wide and 150 m long. Measures were implemented to prevent erosion in adjacent areas and coastal stretches were strengthened.
