The Port of Barcelona is immersed in the planning of extensions and occupations of new spaces, and in order to carry out these projects safely and effectively, it is essential to carry out an exhaustive geotechnical campaign. This campaign covers both terrestrial and marine terrain, providing answers to key questions related to soil resistance, bearing capacity and hydro-mechanical behaviour.

Over a period of almost a year, an exhaustive marine campaign has been carried out with the use of two Jack-Up offshore platforms. These platforms have carried out boreholes and sampling, as well as CPTu tests at more than 100 borehole points, reaching lengths of up to 60 meters. Simultaneously, the onshore campaign has involved CPTu drilling and testing, mobilizing up to 4 drill and test rigs, reaching depths of up to 90 meters.
In parallel, the samples collected have undergone rigorous laboratory tests, including identification, edometric and triaxial tests. To date, more than 1200 samples have been thoroughly analysed, providing a solid data base to inform future design and implementation phases in the planned expansions of the Port of Barcelona.

What is a Jack up platform?
Jack-Up platforms are versatile and critical marine structures in marine geotechnical campaigns, playing a crucial role in obtaining accurate data for engineering projects in aquatic environments. These platforms, known for their ability to rise above the water level, offer a stable platform for the execution of geotechnical surveys in underwater areas.
In marine geotechnical campaigns, jack-up platforms are essential tools to access underwater areas of geotechnical interest for core drilling, sediment sampling or the installation of geotechnical instrumentation.
