Model Fest: Socotec is playing a key role in transforming Barcelona into a more sustainable and advanced urban environment.

In collaboration with Model Fest 2023, Socotec has organized a tour of the most outstanding works that are reshaping the city and establishing it as a benchmark in the new urban model.

The city of Barcelona is immersed in an ambitious process of changing its urban model with the aim of achieving greater sustainability, better mobility and quality public spaces for its citizens. Socotec has actively contributed to several key projects of this transformation, including the connection of the streetcar network that will cover the entire city, the conversion of streets into green axes and the implementation of new service networks in Superillas. These projects were selected to organize a special route as part of the activities of the Barcelona Architecture Festival. The Socotec team, involved in these projects, conducted guided tours of the construction sites, where they used infographics to explain the entire design and construction process to the participants.

Key points of urban transformation from a close-up perspective.

During the on-site talks, the constructive challenges involved in the execution of these projects were highlighted, considering the complexity of a city with a subsoil full of infrastructures. One of the highlights of the urban transformation in Barcelona are the "Green Axes". In this regard, Socotec Spain has proposed an innovative solution to guarantee the stability of the roadways while respecting the areas destined for vegetation. Priority has been given to the continuity of the structural soil, thus allowing trees to grow without damaging the pavement.

Another key project in which Socotec is involved is the unification of the tramway network. The works to connect and expand this network are the starting point to make one of the most important public transport infrastructures in Barcelona a reality. The unified network will connect 9 municipalities in the Metropolitan Area and will modify the current configuration of one of the city's most emblematic routes. In the first phase of the project, 3 new stops and an interchange will be created.

At present, Socotec has started the concreting phase of the track platforms and, at the same time, is installing the first canopies of the future Sicília stop. In addition, Socotec Spain is in charge of inspecting the aluminothermic welds of the new tracks, thus guaranteeing their correct leveling and operation.
