Calculate your company's carbon footprint

Wed 17/04/2024 - 08:14

Carbon footprint describes the total amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions, caused directly or indirectly by an organization. Knowing the data is crucial to taking action and acting through initiatives to reduce emissions.

Today, environmental awareness and corporate responsibility are fundamental to the sustainable success of any company. At SOCOTEC we provide you with assistance in the preparation and presentation of the carbon footprint.

Why is calculating CO2 crucial?

Calculating the carbon footprint is not only a legal requirement, but a proactive action to contribute to theEnvironmental Sustainability. The Carbon footprint represents the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with a company's operations and activities. Knowing this figure allows companies to identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to reduce their environmental impact.

CO2 IN COMPANIES

Guide to measuring your company's Carbon Footprint

Define the sources of GHG emissions in your company. Scope 1 covers direct emissions, Scope 2 addresses indirect emissions from purchased power generation, and scope 3 includes other indirect emissions, such as those related to the supply chain.

Gather relevant data on energy consumption, mobility, purchasing, and other operational aspects. Use accurate information for reliable results.

Uses the appropriate emission factors to convert the collected data into GHG emissions. These factors vary by source and region.

Perform the necessary calculations to obtain the total carbon footprint of your company, meticulously evaluating GHG emissions at each stage of the process.

Numerous online tools and resources are available to facilitate carbon footprint calculation and GHG management. Be sure to select those that fit the specific characteristics of your company, allowing you to effectively manage your GHG emissions and comply with environmental regulations.

How can the carbon footprint be calculated?

Calculating the carbon footprint involves identifying and quantifying the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by a company. The process includes the identification of emission sources, the accurate collection of data on energy consumption, mobility and procurement, and the application of relevant emission factors. Using specialized tools and resources, such as a carbon footprint calculator, the detailed calculation is made, but it is not enough to comply with the regulations. This analysis provides a clear view of the organization's environmental impact, enabling the implementation of specific strategies to reduce the footprint and comply with environmental regulations.

Calculating the Carbon Footprint is a crucial first step, but the real challenge lies in implementing effective strategies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Once you get a clear view of your environmental impact, it's time to address specific areas that contribute to GHG increases. Energy efficiency becomes a focal point, seeking to reduce the consumption of resources not only to decrease costs, but also to mitigate the release of carbon dioxide. In addition, adjustments in the supply chain can optimize processes, reduce emissions, and encourage more sustainable practices. This comprehensive approach will enable your company to not only comply with environmental regulations, but also lead a meaningful shift towards a greener and more sustainable operation.

From SOCOTEC we provide you with assistance in the calculation of the 3 existing scopes:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions: refers to the consumption of fossil fuels in fixed installations, transport and leaks of air conditioning equipment in buildings.
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from electricity consumption. Within this scope are also the consumption of electric vehicles.
  • Scope 3: Other indirect emissions associated with an entity's value chain.

LAW 7/2021

Is there an obligation to calculate in Spain?

Huella de Carbono en Empresas

There is currently no law of its own that regulates the calculation of the Carbon Footprint in Spain. However, in the coming years, a modification of Royal Decree 163/2014 creating the carbon footprint registry, compensation and carbon dioxide absorption projects is foreseen, which would modify Law 7/2021 on Climate Change and Energy Transition, making it a legal obligation for the same companies that,  according to Law 11/2018, they are obliged to prepare and submit an NFR.

Communities in which companies are obliged to calculate their Carbon Footprint

There are Autonomous Communities that have their own regional legislation and, in some communities, the calculation of the carbon footprint is mandatory.

In the Balearic Islands, the calculation of the carbon footprint is mandatory for companies that operate, totally or partially, in the Balearic Islands, with 50 or more employees with a turnover of more than 10 million euros per year. According to Decree 48/2021.

In Andalusia, companies that consume more than 1 GWh/year are required to calculate their carbon footprint, according to Law 8/2018, on Measures against Climate Change and for the Transition to a New Energy Model in Andalusia.

Certifications and Carbon Footprint Calculation Standards

There are two internationally recognized standards in line with the calculation of the Carbon Footprint:

  • ISO 14064 establishes the basis for accrediting and guaranteeing the calculations made for the reporting of the GHGs of organizations. It is used as a methodology to calculate the carbon footprint.
  • ISO 14067 focuses on the quantification of the greenhouse gases generated by the manufacture of a product, service or event. Generate a GHG reduction plan.

Advantages of Carbon Footprint Calculation for Companies

The calculation of the carbon footprint by companies brings with it numerous benefits for the organization:

  • It provides competitive advantages in public and private tenders.
  • Increase customer loyalty.
  • It demonstrates Corporate Social Responsibility's (CSR) commitment to sustainability and the environment.
  • It allows the company to have full control of the emissions generated and its emission sources.
  • Achieve a reduction in business costs derived from energy and fuel consumption.
  • It is a guarantee that the information about the footprint is public, truthful and reliable.
  • ISO 14064 and 14067 are nationally and internationally recognized standards.

Ministry Seals

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has developed a seal for those organizations registered in the section on carbon footprint and reduction and/or compensation commitments.

This seal shows that the organizations are registered in the registry and, in turn, shows the commitment of the companies or entities in their fight against climate change. In addition, it reflects it for the specific year for which the calculation has been made.

The seal allows you to identify the level of effort made by the organization, with three levels:

  1. Carbon footprint calculation stamp. The organization obtains the seal if it has calculated the carbon footprint, at least the 1+2 scope and has defined the reduction targets.
  2. Carbon footprint calculation and reduction seal. It is obtained if the carbon footprint has been calculated for the year of calculation and the three previous years, and has managed to reduce the trend of emissions in the calculated period.
  3. Carbon footprint calculation and compensation seal: The carbon footprint has been calculated, at least scope 1+2 and the emissions have been offset, totally or partially, through a project registered in the CO2 absorption projects section of MITECO.
  4. Seal of calculation, reduction and compensation of the carbon footprint. It is the most complete seal. An organization achieves this if the organization has calculated its carbon footprint, at least the 1+2 scope, and the previous three years, demonstrating a trend of decreasing emissions. In addition, emissions have been offset, in whole or in part, through a CO2 absorption project recognized by MITECO.
